Free Steampunk Embroidery Design
For my Steampunk version of the Dracona Vest pattern by Janina Gold Art, I not only did what I call „pattern frankensteining“ (=mashing different patterns together), I also designed a free Steampunk Embroidery Design for machine and hand embroidery and you can download it for free!

The original Dracona Vest has very sleek lines and looks very fitting for a fantasy outfit, maybe something with elves. But I wanted to be able to wear it with my Steampunk wardrobe, so I decided to pair Janina’s pattern with the (now discontinued) Cosplay by McCalls pattern M2084 „Papillon“ tailcoat which features a swallow tail back which reminds me of victorian tailcoats.
Now I wanted it to be even more Steampunk „in your face“ so I decided to add some gear elements, because nothing screams „steampunk“ like some cogs and gears, right?
I’ve been playing around with the free embroidery design software Ink/Stitch, which is a plugin for the opensource vector program Inkscape, for a while now and enjoy learning new tricks everytime i use it. I’ve done embroidery gears before but I wanted to make something flowing that matches the vest’s design. So I came up with the gear swirls that follow the keyhole neckline. I added clock hands to fill in the gaps and some stars and sparkles to add a bit of whimsy.

While I was already at it I decided that I wanted to have more details on the back as well. I moved the lacing from the front to the back and added another embroidery with gear swirls and stars to the newly added swallow tail. Since it was too tricky to have the tails end really pointy because the corduroy fabric was just to thick I let them end in D-rings instead and added gears and clock hands to them, to repeat the design elements from the front.
Steampunk outfit ideas with my modified Dracona Vest
The vest still works for fantasy or steam-fantasy outfits like a steampunk witch but is also a perfect fit for a proper steampunk outfit! I had a lot of fun playing around with different styles and create outfits with completely different vibes.

Circus- inspired Steampunk
selfmade high-low skirt, thrifted leather lace-up boots, knit socks, handmade kraken necklace, victorian style blouse

Summery Steampunk EGL
selfmade EGL dress, ruffled lace-cuffs and socks, thrifted victorian style ankle boots, feather hairclip by Bloody Brilliants*

Steampunk Witch
Son de Flor* linen dress, selfmade petticoat, vintage leather shoes, selfmade witch hat (Acmella pattern by Stitchmaiden)
Since I already but so much work into the embroidery design I thought I might as well let others enjoy them, too! This is why decided to offer them as freebie here.
Now the front embroidery will work on the un-altered Dracona Vest pattern, while the back is especially for the swallow tails. But you could also use them a completely different project? Be creative!
I designed this free steampunk embroidery design for size M of the Dracona Vest but it should fit other sizes, too. The front designs where made to fit the biggest hoop of my Brother Innov-is NV880E (260 x 160mm). If you need a slightly different size than I offer here, feel free to dm me on instagram, and I can have a look if I can make that possible.

Steampunk Embroidery Design for hand embroidery
If you are a hand embroiderer (cudos to your patience!) I have the designs as lineart for you here as well. Since I rarely do any hand embroidery I don’t know if this is a format that will work, but I thought a true to size PDF should do the trick. If there is any other way you would prefer, let me know!
Questions? Feedback?
Whether you have an embroidery machine or use your hands: I hope the files work for you, this is a first try for me to offer free embroidery designs here. If it works out and there is a demand, I might post some more of my creations here as well. So feedback is very welcome!
If you encounter any problems, or have questions, you can always drop me a message via instagram or have a look at my contact page. I’d love to see what you create with my designs!
Happy sewing and embroidering!
